A common misconception is that dubbing and voice overs are the same thing. Although they’re both post-production processes, they do have key differences.

During dubbing, actors will record audio in their native languages to replace the original language of a video or other type of media. These dubbing actors will capture the tone and emotion of the original content. Afterwards, sound engineers will sync up the new recording into the audio of the original media to make it look and sound as natural as possible. 

On the other hand, a voice over is typically more of a narrative, and doesn’t include syncing up any mouth movements of the original characters. 

When dubbing a video into a foreign language, audio engineers often need to make strategic cuts and edits to slow it down or add more time. Let’s say you have an English movie that needs to be dubbed into German. German words are typically longer than English words, so the sound engineer will need to slow the video down and expedite the narration. Typically, you won’t find audio engineers with these skills unless you work with a foreign language dubbing studio (like us)!
